Yeast Starter
I began the starter for this weekend's brew last night. My starters follow Jamil and John's recipe. About 24-48 hours before brewing, a 1040 starter wort is prepared and put in my Erlenmeyer flask. I have a spray bottle filled with Starsan that I spray everything down with (flask, vial, tinfoil) The yeast vial is poured in and a small piece of tinfoil prevents any crap from falling in. Every time I walk past the flask, I pick it up and give it a good swirl. This isn't as good as a stir plate..but it certainly gets the job done.

ReplyDeleteI have one and it's made starters super easy. My yeasties are so happy by the time I pitch that I've had to move to a blow off tube for the first day or so of fermentation.
Wow! An inexpensive stir plate. I think I may have to put that on the wish list! The swirly method is difficult to keep up with and I know my starters could use a little more love!
ReplyDeleteAnd it just looks SO dang cool to have an Erlenmeyer flask swirling on the kitchen counter!
